Minesweeper turns incomplete information into logic; a number does not reveal a mine, it reveals a constraint on several possible squares around it. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story. The best 'aha' moments are compressed tutorials: after solving one clever mechanism, the player usually understands an entire family of future problems. A hint used one second too late is not help; it is an accusation.

The modern jigsaw puzzle grew from 'dissected maps' made in the eighteenth century. Mapmakers mounted geography lessons on wood and cut them into pieces for students to reassemble. And this deserves a place in the same trivia drawer: Pentominoes are shapes made from five equal squares joined edge to edge. There are twelve distinct free pentominoes, and fitting them into rectangles can become surprisingly difficult.
