Puzzle & Thinking Games · 71
Word puzzles are unusual because the player brings a lifetime of vocabulary into the game, making difficulty depend partly on knowledge acquired far outside the rules. The category's past supplies the companion fact: Lemmings made crowd behavior the puzzle in 1991, asking players to assign limited skills to small creatures that otherwise kept walking toward trouble. A puzzle is a machine for making the obvious wait until you have tried everything else.

One for quiz night
Cryptic crosswords developed their modern style during the early twentieth century. A single clue can contain both a definition and a second word puzzle, which means the sentence is effectively trying to distract you from itself. One more strange-but-useful detail: The first modern-style newspaper crossword is usually credited to Arthur Wynne and appeared in 1913. Its grid was diamond-shaped rather than the familiar square layouts used today.
