Sliding-block puzzles are difficult because open space is the real resource; every move spends and relocates the one gap that makes future moves possible. Another angle makes it more interesting. Daily puzzles create social comparison without direct competition: everyone receives the same problem, then discovers that apparently everyone solved it differently. A three-minute puzzle can produce forty minutes of notes if pride becomes involved.

One more fact worth keeping: Nonograms, also called picture crosswords or Picross, reveal an image through number clues describing runs of filled cells. The picture is the reward for solving a tiny bookkeeping problem perfectly.
