Nonograms encode pictures as number clues along rows and columns, turning image-making into a process of deduction rather than drawing. One more layer: Randomized puzzle generation needs careful constraints; a fresh board is only useful if the system can still guarantee that the problem is solvable and fair. A good clue feels useless right up until the second it becomes the only thing that matters.

Two minutes of rabbit hole
Sudoku became a global craze under a Japanese name, but number-placement puzzles with similar rules appeared earlier in American puzzle magazines. The name roughly means 'single numbers'. The rabbit hole keeps going: A Möbius strip has only one side and one edge. Make one from paper with a half-twist, draw a line without lifting the pencil, and eventually you return to the starting point after covering what looked like both sides.
