Puzzle difficulty is not just solution length. A short solution can be hard if the key idea is hidden, while a long solution can feel easy once the pattern is clear. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Ernő Rubik designed his famous cube in the 1970s as a way to explore three-dimensional movement before it became a worldwide puzzle phenomenon. Nothing becomes more suspicious than a perfectly empty corner of a puzzle board.

The first modern-style newspaper crossword is usually credited to Arthur Wynne and appeared in 1913. Its grid was diamond-shaped rather than the familiar square layouts used today. Meanwhile, this bit of history is hard to resist: Tangrams use only seven pieces, yet those seven shapes can form thousands of silhouettes. The puzzle became an international craze after travelling from China to Europe in the nineteenth century.
