Sokoban, created in Japan in the early 1980s, makes pushing boxes difficult for one reason: unlike many puzzle actions, a bad push cannot simply be pulled back. Another angle makes it more interesting: Undo buttons radically change puzzle design because they let players experiment with hypotheses instead of treating every uncertain move as a permanent risk. The final piece always looks much more obvious after it is in the correct place.

Before the next game
Real Escape Game events began in Japan in 2007 and helped turn the videogame idea of escaping a locked room into a physical group activity. Suddenly the suspicious drawer and hidden key were no longer just pixels. Another tiny history lesson: Minesweeper was bundled with Windows 3.1 in 1992 and became familiar to millions of PC users. Its numbered squares turn probability and deduction into a game where one confident click can still end very badly.
