Puzzle & Thinking Games · 70

Daily puzzles create social comparison without direct competition: everyone receives the same problem, then discovers that apparently everyone solved it differently. The category's past supplies the companion fact: The name Tetris combines 'tetra,' referring to four, with tennis, one of Pajitnov's favorite sports. The undo button knows more about your confidence than any personality test.

Tiny fact jackpot

Kakuro was long known in English-language puzzle magazines as Cross Sums before its Japanese name became internationally popular. The category has another odd corner too: The modern jigsaw puzzle grew from 'dissected maps' made in the eighteenth century. Mapmakers mounted geography lessons on wood and cut them into pieces for students to reassemble.
