Good puzzle interfaces make illegal moves obvious, because the interesting challenge should be reasoning about the rules rather than guessing what the controls permit. Put that beside this bit of history: Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984 after experimenting with pentomino puzzles and reducing the pieces to shapes built from four squares. Puzzle players call it experimentation when the first four plans fail in completely different ways.

2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014 as a small browser project and spread extremely quickly online. The rules fit into a sentence, yet the board has a nasty habit of filling one move before everything finally comes together. For the next piece of trivia: Kakuro was long known in English-language puzzle magazines as Cross Sums before its Japanese name became internationally popular. It looks like a crossword, but every clue is really a small arithmetic constraint.
