Puzzle & Thinking Games · 43
Ernő Rubik designed his famous cube in the 1970s as a way to explore three-dimensional movement before it became a worldwide puzzle phenomenon. One more layer: Number puzzles can feel mathematical even when the arithmetic is trivial; the real work is often structure, ordering and exclusion. The brain's favorite puzzle feature is apparently the exact moment it gets to say 'oh.'

Wait, really?
2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014 as a small browser project and spread extremely quickly online. The rules fit into a sentence, yet the board has a nasty habit of filling one move before everything finally comes together. One more useful piece of useless knowledge: Real Escape Game events began in Japan in 2007 and helped turn the videogame idea of escaping a locked room into a physical group activity. Suddenly the suspicious drawer and hidden key were no longer just pixels.
