Puzzle & Thinking Games · 41
Spatial puzzles often exploit mental rotation, asking the player to imagine an object from a viewpoint the screen is not currently showing. The history behind the category adds another layer: Logic puzzles often become easier when the player marks what cannot be true, because eliminating possibilities can be more powerful than guessing what is true. The brain's favorite puzzle feature is apparently the exact moment it gets to say 'oh.'

A quick detour
Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov in Moscow in 1984 while he worked at a computing center of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Its name combines a reference to four-part shapes with Pajitnov's fondness for tennis. One more for the mental shelf: 2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014 as a small browser project and spread extremely quickly online. The rules fit into a sentence, yet the board has a nasty habit of filling one move before everything finally comes together.
