Minesweeper turns incomplete information into logic; a number does not reveal a mine, it reveals a constraint on several possible squares around it. The design side has its own twist: Good puzzle interfaces make illegal moves obvious, because the interesting challenge should be reasoning about the rules rather than guessing what the controls permit. Every elegant solution has an awkward ancestor made of guesses, dead ends and one unreasonable assumption.

Fact break

Mastermind was created by Mordecai Meirowitz and released commercially in 1970. The code-breaking game reduces deduction to colored pegs, but a good guess is really a tiny experiment designed to eliminate possibilities. One more curious detail: The Soma cube was invented by Piet Hein in 1933. Seven irregular pieces, each made from small cubes, can be assembled into a larger cube and many other shapes,a three-dimensional cousin of tangram-style thinking.
