Ernő Rubik designed his famous cube in the 1970s as a way to explore three-dimensional movement before it became a worldwide puzzle phenomenon. One more layer: Number puzzles can feel mathematical even when the arithmetic is trivial; the real work is often structure, ordering and exclusion. Puzzles are one of the few places where staring at the same object longer can legitimately count as progress.

Before the next game
Real Escape Game events began in Japan in 2007 and helped turn the videogame idea of escaping a locked room into a physical group activity. Suddenly the suspicious drawer and hidden key were no longer just pixels. A separate bit of trivia: Cryptic crosswords developed their modern style during the early twentieth century. A single clue can contain both a definition and a second word puzzle, which means the sentence is effectively trying to distract you from itself.
