Puzzle & Thinking Games · 44
Match-three games are satisfying partly because one move can create a cascade, letting the board continue solving itself after the player's hand has stopped. Another angle makes it more interesting: Constraint puzzles become readable when information overlaps. One clue narrows possibilities; several clues crossing the same area can force a single answer. Nothing becomes more suspicious than a perfectly empty corner of a puzzle board.

A fact with good replay value
The Soma cube was invented by Piet Hein in 1933. Seven irregular pieces, each made from small cubes, can be assembled into a larger cube and many other shapes,a three-dimensional cousin of tangram-style thinking. There is also this: Kakuro was long known in English-language puzzle magazines as Cross Sums before its Japanese name became internationally popular. It looks like a crossword, but every clue is really a small arithmetic constraint.
