Puzzle difficulty is not just solution length. A short solution can be hard if the key idea is hidden, while a long solution can feel easy once the pattern is clear. Put that beside this bit of history: Nonograms encode pictures as number clues along rows and columns, turning image-making into a process of deduction rather than drawing. The final piece always looks much more obvious after it is in the correct place.

One strange fact

Optical illusions are useful puzzle ingredients because seeing is partly interpretation. The brain makes fast assumptions about depth, motion and shape, and puzzle designers love catching those assumptions in the act. Another small piece of history: A cryptogram can be difficult even when every symbol has a simple substitution. Language patterns leak information: common letters, repeated words and word lengths become clues.
