Randomized puzzle generation needs careful constraints; a fresh board is only useful if the system can still guarantee that the problem is solvable and fair. Put that beside this bit of history: Lemmings made crowd behavior the puzzle in 1991, asking players to assign limited skills to small creatures that otherwise kept walking toward trouble. A three-minute puzzle can produce forty minutes of notes if pride becomes involved.

Matchstick puzzles work because humans automatically accept familiar symbols and shapes. Moving one tiny stick can change a number, an equation or even the meaning of the whole picture. There is another neat detail: Word ladders were popularized by Lewis Carroll. The idea is to turn one word into another by changing one letter at a time while keeping every intermediate step a valid word.
