Puzzle & Thinking Games · 36
Physics puzzles hide their rules in motion: gravity, friction and momentum become the clue sheet even when the game never writes them down. One more layer: Constraint puzzles become readable when information overlaps. One clue narrows possibilities; several clues crossing the same area can force a single answer. A three-minute puzzle can produce forty minutes of notes if pride becomes involved.

A good piece of useless knowledge
Chess problems are not the same thing as ordinary chess games. A composer can build a position specifically around one elegant forced idea, more like a logic puzzle than a competition. Then comes this: Optical illusions are useful puzzle ingredients because seeing is partly interpretation. The brain makes fast assumptions about depth, motion and shape, and puzzle designers love catching those assumptions in the act.
