Puzzle designers use symmetry as both help and misdirection; a repeated pattern can reveal structure or convince the player to assume two sides behave the same when they do not. Put that beside this bit of history: A good puzzle can feel impossible and then obvious within one second; the board did not change, only the player's model of it did. A hint used one second too late is not help; it is an accusation.

Curiosity break

Tangrams use only seven pieces, yet those seven shapes can form thousands of silhouettes. The puzzle became an international craze after travelling from China to Europe in the nineteenth century. And this deserves a place in the same trivia drawer: The classic river-crossing puzzle with a wolf, goat and cabbage is centuries old in spirit. Variants appear in medieval writings, proving that people have enjoyed logistical headaches for a very long time.
