Good puzzle interfaces make illegal moves obvious, because the interesting challenge should be reasoning about the rules rather than guessing what the controls permit. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Match-three games are satisfying partly because one move can create a cascade, letting the board continue solving itself after the player's hand has stopped. The final piece always looks much more obvious after it is in the correct place.

The rabbit hole
The classic river-crossing puzzle with a wolf, goat and cabbage is centuries old in spirit. Variants appear in medieval writings, proving that people have enjoyed logistical headaches for a very long time. The rabbit hole keeps going: The '15 puzzle' caused a craze in the late nineteenth century. Some scrambled positions are mathematically impossible to solve, which is a wonderfully cruel property for a puzzle sold to the public.
