Puzzle & Thinking Games · 28

Sliding-block puzzles are difficult because open space is the real resource; every move spends and relocates the one gap that makes future moves possible. Puzzle difficulty is not just solution length. A short solution can be hard if the key idea is hidden, while a long solution can feel easy once the pattern is clear. Every elegant solution has an awkward ancestor made of guesses, dead ends and one unreasonable assumption.

The curious bit

The Tower of Hanoi puzzle was marketed in the nineteenth century with a story about monks moving 64 golden disks. At one move per second, the full task would take far longer than the age of the universe. There is also this: Tangrams use only seven pieces, yet those seven shapes can form thousands of silhouettes. The puzzle became an international craze after travelling from China to Europe in the nineteenth century.
