Physics puzzles hide their rules in motion: gravity, friction and momentum become the clue sheet even when the game never writes them down. One more layer: Spatial puzzles often exploit mental rotation, asking the player to imagine an object from a viewpoint the screen is not currently showing. Puzzles are one of the few places where staring at the same object longer can legitimately count as progress.

One for quiz night

Cryptic crosswords developed their modern style during the early twentieth century. A single clue can contain both a definition and a second word puzzle, which means the sentence is effectively trying to distract you from itself. A second surprise: Minesweeper was bundled with Windows 3.1 in 1992 and became familiar to millions of PC users. Its numbered squares turn probability and deduction into a game where one confident click can still end very badly.
