Kakuro was long known in English-language puzzle magazines as Cross Sums before its Japanese name became internationally popular. It looks like a crossword, but every clue is really a small arithmetic constraint. And for something completely different: Cryptic crosswords developed their modern style during the early twentieth century. A single clue can contain both a definition and a second word puzzle, which means the sentence is effectively trying to distract you from itself.
