Puzzle & Thinking Games · 21
Spatial puzzles often exploit mental rotation, asking the player to imagine an object from a viewpoint the screen is not currently showing. The history behind the category adds another layer: The name Tetris combines 'tetra,' referring to four, with tennis, one of Pajitnov's favorite sports. The final piece always looks much more obvious after it is in the correct place.

Before the next game
Real Escape Game events began in Japan in 2007 and helped turn the videogame idea of escaping a locked room into a physical group activity. Suddenly the suspicious drawer and hidden key were no longer just pixels. A different kind of surprise: Kakuro was long known in English-language puzzle magazines as Cross Sums before its Japanese name became internationally popular. It looks like a crossword, but every clue is really a small arithmetic constraint.
