Puzzle & Thinking Games · 20

Match-three games are satisfying partly because one move can create a cascade, letting the board continue solving itself after the player's hand has stopped. One more layer: Spatial puzzles often exploit mental rotation, asking the player to imagine an object from a viewpoint the screen is not currently showing. A three-minute puzzle can produce forty minutes of notes if pride becomes involved.

Seven irregular pieces, each made from small cubes, can be assembled into a larger cube and many other shapes,a three-dimensional cousin of tangram-style thinking. The next bit is equally fun: Real Escape Game events began in Japan in 2007 and helped turn the videogame idea of escaping a locked room into a physical group activity. Suddenly the suspicious drawer and hidden key were no longer just pixels.
