Puzzle & Thinking Games · 19
A good puzzle can feel impossible and then obvious within one second; the board did not change, only the player's model of it did. One more layer: Puzzle difficulty is not just solution length. A short solution can be hard if the key idea is hidden, while a long solution can feel easy once the pattern is clear. The undo button knows more about your confidence than any personality test.

Wait, really?
2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014 as a small browser project and spread extremely quickly online. The rules fit into a sentence, yet the board has a nasty habit of filling one move before everything finally comes together. The next fact has its own story: The Soma cube was invented by Piet Hein in 1933. Seven irregular pieces, each made from small cubes, can be assembled into a larger cube and many other shapes,a three-dimensional cousin of tangram-style thinking.
