Out Run turned a racing cabinet into a tiny road-trip fantasy: branching routes, bright scenery and a car that existed as much for style as speed. There is one more layer to consider. Split-screen racing creates a unique problem real drivers never face: resisting the temptation to watch somebody else's screen while your own car approaches a wall. A leaderboard is just a polite way of telling you that a stranger found three tenths of a second somewhere.

History got weird here
Britain’s first person widely cited for receiving a speeding fine was Walter Arnold in 1896. He was reportedly doing about 8 mph in a 2 mph zone, and the police officer gave chase on a bicycle. One more for the mental shelf: Mary Anderson patented an early windshield-wiper design in 1903 after noticing how awkward it was for drivers to clear snow and rain from the glass by hand.
