Driving & Racing Games · 27

Arcade racers often exaggerate grip and braking because believable speed is not always the same thing as physically accurate speed. Put that beside this bit of history: Super Sprint put three steering wheels on one cabinet in 1986, proving that elbow room could be part of the multiplayer challenge. Racing-game mathematics is simple: the wall is stationary, yet somehow it keeps winning.

Worth knowing

Mary Anderson patented an early windshield-wiper design in 1903 after noticing how awkward it was for drivers to clear snow and rain from the glass by hand. One more useful piece of useless knowledge: The 24 Hours of Le Mans has been run since 1923. Unlike a short sprint, the challenge is endurance: cars, drivers and crews have to stay fast while surviving an entire day and night.
