The 24 Hours of Le Mans began in 1923, which is why endurance racing is as much about surviving the night as setting a fast lap. There is one more layer to consider. A perfect racing-game corner is a tiny three-part puzzle: brake, turn, accelerate; doing any one of them too early usually ruins the other two. Racing games are excellent teachers of humility because the stopwatch has no interest in excuses.

Two minutes of rabbit hole

John Boyd Dunlop developed an influential pneumatic tire in 1888 after trying to make his son's tricycle ride more comfortably. Air-filled tires soon became important far beyond bicycles. A second surprise: The old Le Mans start made drivers run across the track to their parked cars, jump in and race away. Safety concerns eventually killed the tradition, which is why modern endurance races begin much more sensibly.
