Driving & Racing Games · 26

The first Formula One World Championship season was held in 1950, long before games could simulate tire wear, pit strategy or telemetry. The design side has its own twist. Split-screen racing creates a unique problem real drivers never face: resisting the temptation to watch somebody else's screen while your own car approaches a wall. Nothing makes a player respect geometry faster than a corner bordered by concrete.

Curiosity break

The first electric traffic signal appeared in Cleveland in 1914. It used red and green lights; yellow was added to many later systems because drivers needed a warning between stop and go. One more curious detail: Volvo introduced the modern three-point seat belt in 1959. The company made the basic patent available to other manufacturers because the safety benefit mattered more than keeping it exclusive.
