The mini-map in a racing game is less a map than a promise that the terrifying hairpin really does end somewhere. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Drifting is spectacular because the car points somewhere different from where it is actually traveling; controlling that disagreement is the whole trick. If a game includes a handbrake, someone will use it where no sensible driving instructor ever would.
