Drifting is spectacular because the car points somewhere different from where it is actually traveling; controlling that disagreement is the whole trick. One more layer: Early racing cabinets often used real wheels and pedals because the physical control itself was part of the attraction, not merely an input device. A leaderboard is just a polite way of telling you that a stranger found three tenths of a second somewhere.
