Split-screen racing creates a unique problem real drivers never face: resisting the temptation to watch somebody else's screen while your own car approaches a wall. Karl Benz patented his Patent-Motorwagen in 1886, and it is widely regarded as the first practical automobile built around an internal-combustion engine rather than a carriage adapted after the fact. Another rabbit hole starts here: London installed a gas-lit road traffic signal outside Parliament in 1868. Less than a month later a gas leak caused it to explode and injure the police officer operating it,an impressively dramatic first version of traffic control.
