London installed a gas-lit road traffic signal outside Parliament in 1868. Less than a month later a gas leak caused it to explode and injure the police officer operating it,an impressively dramatic first version of traffic control. The next fact takes a different route: The first Formula One World Championship race was held at Silverstone in 1950. Giuseppe Farina won that opening race and later became the first official F1 world champion.
