Attract modes are the self-running demonstrations arcade machines use when nobody is playing, effectively turning idle time into a tiny commercial for the next coin. Fixed screens force designers to make every object count because there is nowhere else for the action to hide. Arcade games specialize in the sentence 'I know exactly what to do,' immediately followed by not doing it.

Tiny fact jackpot
NBA Jam exploded into arcades in 1993 with exaggerated dunks, two-on-two basketball and the famous 'on fire' state after consecutive baskets. Realism was invited, but spectacle got the better seat. A second fact changes the subject nicely: Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn videogame arcades into a mass phenomenon. Its descending rows of aliens created pressure with almost no story at all.
