Asteroids used crisp vector graphics in 1979, drawing luminous lines instead of filling the screen with conventional pixel artwork. Something to tell a friend

Pong was released by Atari in 1972 and became one of the first major arcade videogame hits. Its entire world is two paddles, one ball and the dangerous discovery that simple rules can eat an afternoon. The category has another odd corner too: Centipede used a trackball instead of a joystick. That control method let players move a cursor quickly and precisely, giving the cabinet a distinct physical feel.
