A joystick gate can physically restrict movement directions, which is why classic four-way games can feel different on hardware designed for eight-way control. Another angle makes it more interesting: Simple controls age well because new players can discover the entire input vocabulary in seconds, leaving the interesting part—timing and decisions—to carry the challenge. Old arcade sound effects are short because they had a difficult job: be heard over every other old arcade sound effect.

A fact with good replay value
Missile Command arrived in 1980 during the Cold War and gives the player no final victory, only increasingly difficult waves until the cities are lost. That bleak structure is unusually honest for a game about stopping incoming missiles. There is a bonus fact hiding here too: Dance Dance Revolution debuted in Japanese arcades in 1998 and replaced the joystick with a floor pad. Suddenly an arcade score could depend on footwork, stamina and whether the player was willing to dance in public.
