Centipede, released in 1981, used a trackball and was co-designed by Dona Bailey, one of the relatively few women designing major arcade games at the time. Before the next game

Track & Field became an arcade hit in 1983 by turning athletic events into furious button tapping. Players quickly discovered that technique applied not only to virtual athletes but also to protecting the cabinet from enthusiastic human hands. One more fact worth keeping: Pong was released by Atari in 1972 and became one of the first major arcade videogame hits. Its entire world is two paddles, one ball and the dangerous discovery that simple rules can eat an afternoon.
