Frogger turned crossing a road into a perfect arcade premise by making every lane a moving timing puzzle with almost no explanation required. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Alternating two-player modes created competition without simultaneous hardware; friends could share one cabinet and still turn every life into a public performance. Arcade difficulty rises gently until the game remembers it was built to eat coins.

Tiny history break
Dance Dance Revolution debuted in Japanese arcades in 1998 and replaced the joystick with a floor pad. Suddenly an arcade score could depend on footwork, stamina and whether the player was willing to dance in public. There is another neat detail: Donkey Kong introduced Mario in 1981, although he was originally known simply as Jumpman. His job was described as carpenter before later games permanently associated him with plumbing.
