Pong was released by Atari in 1972 and became one of the first major arcade videogame hits. Its entire world is two paddles, one ball and the dangerous discovery that simple rules can eat an afternoon. Another rabbit hole starts here: Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn videogame arcades into a mass phenomenon. Its descending rows of aliens created pressure with almost no story at all.
