Fixed screens force designers to make every object count because there is nowhere else for the action to hide. Put that beside this bit of history. Arcade difficulty was shaped partly by economics: a machine had to be exciting enough to earn another coin without ending the player's turn so quickly that it felt unfair. Arcade difficulty rises gently until the game remembers it was built to eat coins.

One for quiz night

Street Fighter II reached arcades in 1991 and helped make head-to-head fighting cabinets social magnets. A single machine could produce a queue of challengers and a local pecking order without any online matchmaking at all. Then comes this: Pac-Man was released in 1980 and deliberately moved away from the era’s heavy focus on space shooting. The maze, ghosts and eating mechanic made it immediately recognizable to a much broader audience.
