Arcade & Classic Games · 6

Frogger turned crossing a road into a perfect arcade premise by making every lane a moving timing puzzle with almost no explanation required. The design side has its own twist. Classic arcade games often explain themselves through motion: enemies approach, objects fall, and the player's first mistake teaches the goal faster than a manual could. Arcade difficulty rises gently until the game remembers it was built to eat coins.

Curiosity break

Centipede used a trackball instead of a joystick. That control method let players move a cursor quickly and precisely, giving the cabinet a distinct physical feel. And for something completely different: Tempest used vector graphics, drawing bright geometric lines instead of filling the screen with ordinary pixels. Its glowing tunnel still looks striking because it never tried to imitate reality.
