Attract modes are the self-running demonstrations arcade machines use when nobody is playing, effectively turning idle time into a tiny commercial for the next coin. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Bonus fruit, ships, bells and other strange objects became score bait because a rare target gives players a reason to break their safe routine. Classic games have tiny rulebooks and enormous opinions about timing.

The rabbit hole
Asteroids also used vector graphics, which gave its rocks and ships razor-sharp outlines on black. The minimalist look was partly technology and partly instant visual identity. For the next piece of trivia: High-score tables turned arcade cabinets into local competitions. Three letters could become a tiny public signature, assuming your initials survived long enough before someone beat the score.
