Arcade & Classic Games · 4

Classic arcade games often explain themselves through motion: enemies approach, objects fall, and the player's first mistake teaches the goal faster than a manual could. A related fact is worth keeping: Centipede, released in 1981, used a trackball and was co-designed by Dona Bailey, one of the relatively few women designing major arcade games at the time. The cabinet may be forty years old; the frustration of missing by one pixel remains completely current.

The curious bit

Donkey Kong introduced Mario in 1981, although he was originally known simply as Jumpman. His job was described as carpenter before later games permanently associated him with plumbing. The next bit is equally fun: Frogger turned crossing a road into arcade drama in 1981. Cars, logs, turtles and a time limit proved that a daily nuisance could become a perfect videogame premise.
