Fixed screens force designers to make every object count because there is nowhere else for the action to hide. That connects nicely with a historical detail: A joystick gate can physically restrict movement directions, which is why classic four-way games can feel different on hardware designed for eight-way control. The cabinet may be forty years old; the frustration of missing by one pixel remains completely current.

Worth knowing

Tempest used vector graphics, drawing bright geometric lines instead of filling the screen with ordinary pixels. Its glowing tunnel still looks striking because it never tried to imitate reality. A second surprise: Asteroids also used vector graphics, which gave its rocks and ships razor-sharp outlines on black. The minimalist look was partly technology and partly instant visual identity.
