Arcade difficulty was shaped partly by economics: a machine had to be exciting enough to earn another coin without ending the player's turn so quickly that it felt unfair. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Difficulty ramps often happen through speed rather than new rules, letting the player understand everything while still losing because the familiar problem stops waiting politely. Classic games have tiny rulebooks and enormous opinions about timing.

The curious bit
Donkey Kong introduced Mario in 1981, although he was originally known simply as Jumpman. His job was described as carpenter before later games permanently associated him with plumbing. There is also this: Centipede used a trackball instead of a joystick. That control method let players move a cursor quickly and precisely, giving the cabinet a distinct physical feel.
