Centipede, released in 1981, used a trackball and was co-designed by Dona Bailey, one of the relatively few women designing major arcade games at the time. The design side has its own twist: A score display gives failure a souvenir. The run ends, but the number remains as evidence that the next coin has a target. A flashing bonus object is the machine asking whether greed is stronger than survival instinct.

Two minutes of rabbit hole
Pac-Man was released in 1980 and deliberately moved away from the era’s heavy focus on space shooting. The maze, ghosts and eating mechanic made it immediately recognizable to a much broader audience. One more useful piece of useless knowledge: Frogger turned crossing a road into arcade drama in 1981. Cars, logs, turtles and a time limit proved that a daily nuisance could become a perfect videogame premise.
