Difficulty ramps often happen through speed rather than new rules, letting the player understand everything while still losing because the familiar problem stops waiting politely. A related fact is worth keeping. Arcade difficulty was shaped partly by economics: a machine had to be exciting enough to earn another coin without ending the player's turn so quickly that it felt unfair. Nothing makes a joystick feel more important than having exactly one life left.

Trivia unlocked

Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn videogame arcades into a mass phenomenon. Its descending rows of aliens created pressure with almost no story at all. One more curious detail: Donkey Kong introduced Mario in 1981, although he was originally known simply as Jumpman. His job was described as carpenter before later games permanently associated him with plumbing.
