Cabinet artwork mattered before the first second of play. Side panels, marquees and control layouts had to sell an experience from across a noisy arcade. One more layer: Difficulty ramps often happen through speed rather than new rules, letting the player understand everything while still losing because the familiar problem stops waiting politely. Old arcade sound effects are short because they had a difficult job: be heard over every other old arcade sound effect.

History got weird here

Frogger turned crossing a road into arcade drama in 1981. Cars, logs, turtles and a time limit proved that a daily nuisance could become a perfect videogame premise. A separate bit of trivia: Tempest used vector graphics, drawing bright geometric lines instead of filling the screen with ordinary pixels. Its glowing tunnel still looks striking because it never tried to imitate reality.
