Cabinet artwork mattered before the first second of play. Side panels, marquees and control layouts had to sell an experience from across a noisy arcade. Another angle makes it more interesting: A score display gives failure a souvenir. The run ends, but the number remains as evidence that the next coin has a target. Arcade difficulty rises gently until the game remembers it was built to eat coins.

Curiosity break

Centipede used a trackball instead of a joystick. That control method let players move a cursor quickly and precisely, giving the cabinet a distinct physical feel. The minimalist look was partly technology and partly instant visual identity.
