Q*bert used an isometric pyramid in 1982, making simple hopping controls look like movement through a strange three-dimensional toy. The design side has its own twist: Pattern learning became a classic arcade skill because deterministic enemy behavior rewards players who notice that chaos is sometimes only pretending to be random. Something to tell a friend

Pong was released by Atari in 1972 and became one of the first major arcade videogame hits. Its entire world is two paddles, one ball and the dangerous discovery that simple rules can eat an afternoon. One more for the mental shelf: Pac-Man was released in 1980 and deliberately moved away from the era’s heavy focus on space shooting. The maze, ghosts and eating mechanic made it immediately recognizable to a much broader audience.
