A score display gives failure a souvenir. The run ends, but the number remains as evidence that the next coin has a target. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Cabinet artwork mattered before the first second of play. Side panels, marquees and control layouts had to sell an experience from across a noisy arcade. Nothing makes a joystick feel more important than having exactly one life left.

Tiny history break
Dance Dance Revolution debuted in Japanese arcades in 1998 and replaced the joystick with a floor pad. Suddenly an arcade score could depend on footwork, stamina and whether the player was willing to dance in public. For the next piece of trivia: Pong was released by Atari in 1972 and became one of the first major arcade videogame hits. Its entire world is two paddles, one ball and the dangerous discovery that simple rules can eat an afternoon.
